Plants can really help us out. They provide sustenance, they can be a calming, relaxing and refreshing presence and their presence in the home or workplace can serve to lighten the mood. But plants can be so much more than that too, through teas, oils or foods, these are plants which can calm the mind and ease anxiety.
If you’re using essential oils don’t forget to never ever ingest them, and to dilute them with a carrier oil before applying them to the skin.
Patchouli – Its oil gives off an earthy smell, perfect for anyone who loves the smell of soil after it rains. It’s pure and keeps you in touch with nature, and also has been known to ease anxiety.
Peppermint – Its tea is fantastic for nausea, which can be a side effect of anxiety. It also helps relax the mind, as does its oil. Dilute peppermint oil with a carrier oil to ease headaches.
Lemon balm – Lemon balm is a member of the mint family, so shares many traits with peppermint. Lemon balm contains chemicals that seem to have a sedative, calming effect. It’s often used to help sleep.
Sage – Sage is fantastic for the memory; it’s often used to treat Alzheimer’s disease. Sage is also great for depression, and burning sage is widely believed to banish evil spirits and bad vibes.
Marjoram – Its oil is used to encourage more restful sleep, which can be difficult to achieve if you suffer from anxiety. All you need is a few drops of its oil on your pillow. Marjoram oil has so many benefits it is also referred to as the ‘happy herb’.
Rosemary – Not only does rosemary taste delicious in foods, it’s also fantastic for memory, concentration and a healthy brain. If you’re having a difficult time at the moment, rosemary oil can be used in an oil burner to achieve a little peace of mind.
